Columbia firefighters battled a house fire Tuesday afternoon that damaged a home on the city’s northwest side.
Firefighters were called to the home of Jahnen Howard at 430 Sunset Drive off Mississippi 35 shortly after noon and arrived to find flames coming from the vents on the roof. The fire was under control in less than 15 minutes as firefighters entered the house and attacked it from inside and also vented the roof to help remove smoke and heat.
“They did a good job getting it out quickly,” Columbia Fire Chief Jeff McKenzie said. “It had gotten in the attic and had vented through the roof when we arrived. There was heavy smoke and flames when we went in.”
Police officers shut the road down while firefighters battled the flames. Though no one was home at the time of the blaze, AAA Ambulance Service was called to the scene to check one of the owners who had arrived on the scene and was upset.
Firefighters cleared the scene shortly after 1:15 p.m. The cause of the fire was still under investigation Tuesday afternoon.
