Paintings and encouraging sayings now greet students in the restrooms at Columbia Elementary School.
The Joy Project brought the artwork to the bathroom stall doors throughout the school Saturday in preparation for the first day Monday.
“Our mission is to provide the children of the Columbia School District and Marion County with positive vibes, encouragement, courage, inspiration, and to never give up,” Danielle Barber, who helped coordinate the event, said. “We had the idea and I asked Mr. (Robbie) White (principal) Wednesday morning and by Wednesday afternoon he had spoken with Mr. (Jason) Harris (superintendent).”
Barber said she was please with the handful of volunteers who showed to do the work.
“We asked for volunteers at the last minute,” she said. “We are in the beginning stages of the development of the Joy Project. After Columbia Elementary, we will move forward to the next school. We want to apply more joyful and inspiring quotes. We are a volunteer group and need volunteers.”
Barber encouraged volunteers to be a part of the project.
“Please let your friends or anybody you think would be interested in being a part of a positive team for our boys and girls; after all, they are our future,” Barber said. “We need them to know that they can and will achieve greatness.”
