The sounds of medieval times will soon echo through the corridors at Columbia High School.
The music and costumes of the era are part of the school’s latest musical ensemble, which has two nights of music and food planned for Dec. 13 and Dec. 14. Tickets for the CHS Madrigal Ensemble’s 6 p.m. performances at Calvary Baptist Church went on sale Tuesday, and choral director Kim Walley said she is excited about the venture.
“It’s totally new for CHS,” she said. “A madrigal includes medieval Renaissance music, dramas, medieval dress; it’s like a dinner theater. There will be a king, a queen, a jester. There are 15 students involved.”
The ensemble has spent the semester rehearsing.
“They meet every day for third period,” Walley said. “It is an auditioned ensemble. This show transports you in time to the 1400s. The beginning of the show is full of comedy. We will serve wassail, a full meal, which is hosted by the jester, who is Carson Walley. The end of the evening is called the masque. That is where the students finish out the night singing their heavier literature from the Renaissance period.”
The group will perform 16 songs during the presentation, which lasts about an hour and a half altogether.
Tickets are $25 and include dinner. They can be bought at the high school’s front office.
Ensemble members include Dasia Allen, Carson Lawley, Jori Neal, Sarah Mason, Jason Ball, Kimberly Martin, Olivia Carney, Julia Johnson, Margaret Turnage, Adrienne Arinder, Kennedy Newsom, Alexis May, Kayla Hammond, Jonathan Jiminez, Jennifer Stringer and Kolton Sorrell.
