Madison Robertson traded in the blue and gold of Columbia High School for maroon and gold pompoms Thursday morning.
The senior co-captain inked a scholarship with family, teammates, coaches and faculty by her side to cheer at Pearl River Community College and is excited for the opportunity.
“It means a lot to me. I honestly wouldn’t be here today without my coach, Ms. Ashley (Haddox), and my teammates,” Robertson said. “They encouraged me to go out and do my best in trying out for college.”
Robertson said it was awesome to have so many people in attendance supporting her, including Pearl River cheer coach Alesa Lee.
“Not everyone can say they have coaches, teammates and family who support them no matter what,” she said.
Robertson didn’t envision cheering in college initially, but her family, friends and coaches encouraged her to give it a shot.
“I wasn’t sure about cheering in college, but I’m glad I made that decision,” she said. “I think it’s going to be a great year.”
It’s going to be a much different experience for Robertson cheering in college one she was unsure about at first.
“I’m not a big fan of change. I knew that going into college was going to be the biggest change of my life,” she said. “I figured that trying out for the cheerleading team might help me make friends and get me out of my comfort zone to experience more things.”
Robertson added having friends already at PRCC and the proximity to home influenced her decision to attend the Poplarville school.
