Columbia merchants are expecting to be busy as the annual Mississippi Tax-Free Weekend is coming up Friday and Saturday.
Clothes and for the first time this year, school supplies, can be purchased without having to pay sales tax as long as the individual item is less than $100. Any single item more than $100 will be charged sales tax.
Columbia schools open for students Monday, Aug. 5 and Marion County schools Tuesday, Aug. 6.
The uniforms for the Columbia School District include:
• Polo-style shirt with buttons or regular button-down shirts in the solid colors of white, navy or black;
• Undershirts or turtlenecks to wear under the shirts in solid colors of white, navy, black or gray;
• Sweatshirts must have ribbed collar, waist and wrist in solid colors of navy, black or gray. Sweatshirts may not have pockets or hoods;
• School-approved hoodies are allowed for students from kindergarten to eighth grade only;
• Solid white, navy, black or gray sweaters and/or vests that are plain and contain no hoods or visible emblem;
• School-approved letter jackets and Wildcat wear;
• Solid white, navy, black or gray jackets;
• Pants, capris and shorts are to be khaki, navy or black. For students fourth through 12th grades, pants and capris must have front waistband and belt loops;
• Dresses, jumper and skirts are to be khaki, navy or black solid colors;
• Belts must be solid brown, black, navy, khaki or white;
• Socks need to be matching solid white, navy, khaki, black or brown.
East Marion:
• Polo or oxford shirts in colors of red, white and navy;
• Undershirts and turtlenecks in the colors of red, white or navy.
West Marion:
• Polo or oxford shirts in red, white or black;
• Undershirts and turtlenecks in red, white or black.
For the Marion County School District the rest of the uniforms are:
• Sweaters, including hoodies, and jackets in red, navy, black, gray or khaki colors;
• Dress/docker style pants, capris and shorts either khaki or navy;
• Jumpers, dresses and skirts in khaki or nay colors;
• Belts in brown, khaki or black colors;
• Leggings in red, white, black, navy or tan colors;
• Shoes must be closed-toe.
