A team of volunteers recently helped restore a pavilion on the East Marion Elementary School playground, giving students somewhere to escape the elements and enjoy activities.
Volunteers from Improve Baptist Church and the Parent Teacher Organization helped make the project possible.
“There was a hole in the roof,” Principal Chase Robbins said. “The volunteers came out and stripped off the old roof and started working on it. The church and the PTO are doing the work; it’s all volunteers. Wolfe’s Lumber Yard also helped.”
It wasn’t just the pavilion that received a facelift.
“Various parents and grandparents have donated swings for the swing sets,” Robbins said. “They are stepping up big time. The PTO is doing a lot. They are really helping the school. We’ve had a lot of help and a lot of support. We’re working on sprucing up a few things. It’s huge for the school.”
Teachers also bought a volleyball net.
Jonathan McLemore, youth pastor at Improve, was one of the volunteers working on the project and said the church was glad to help.
“We wanted to help the kids with their playground,” he said. “We had to take the old roof off and put a new one on. We want to give them a little shade and somewhere to relax. We’ve gotten a lot of help from some area businesses. Wolfe’s Lumber Yard donated some items, and A-1 Buildings helped us. The PTO did all the groundwork.”
Robbins said other projects are planned for the school soon.
“We’ve got such a great group of volunteers,” he said. “I’m so thankful for their efforts.”
