Five people were injured in two separate accidents midday Tuesday.
The first accident occurred around 11 a.m. on U.S. 98 near the intersection of Mississippi 587 at Cox’s Triangle.
A silver Chevrolet Silverado and a silver Nissan Altima collided in the westbound lanes, sending the Altima into a ditch. The Altima also struck a parked BMW in the parking lot of the Devyani salon, shattering its rear window. Debris from the accident also broke a window at the salon.
Officials at the scene said three people, whose names were not available, were transported to Forrest General Hospital by AAA Ambulance Service. One person went by personal vehicle to Marion General Hospital. The Rescue 7 helicopter was launched and landed at Marion General but did not transport any of the victims.
The Foxworth Volunteer Fire Department responded, as did Southwest Marion and South Marion. Sheriff’s deputies also assisted the Mississippi Highway Patrol on the call.
As crews worked the accident, AAA was also dispatched to a pedestrian who was hit by a car in the Fred’s parking lot in Columbia.
Police said Chris Pennington was on a motorized scooter when he was struck and knocked to the ground by a car backing out of a parking space.
Pennington was transported to Marion General for treatment of his injuries, which were cuts and bruises and a possible leg injury. The 67-year-old is a lifelong Columbia resident well-known for riding his scooter around town.
