Jaeda Goar, a rising senior at Sumrall High School, was awarded the Peter R. Marsh
Foundation Silent Servant Scholarship Award. This award honors a servant leader that displays
a passion for public service, empathy, and provides service opportunities for their peers. Jaeda is the founder of the Heart and Soul Club at Sumrall High School that benefits St. Luke Home
Health and Hospice. She was nominated for this award by her club sponsor, Jamie Sorrell,
and school counselor, Colleen Morris. Matt Thomas, Principal at Sumrall High School,
presented the scholarship award of $500 to Jaeda at the end-of-year awards program. Jaeda
spoke to the student body at SHS about what calls her to serve. She stated that she serves
because she wants to spread the love of God. The Heart and Soul Club is built on Matthew
5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do
people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to
everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see
your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Jaeda thanked the members of the Heart
and Soul Club for joining her mission, earning over 700 hours of community service
collecting donations for St. Luke this year. The first service project kicked off with “Soul to Sole.”
Students collected 260 pairs of socks and slippers that were donated and distributed to patients
of St. Luke. Throughout the school year Jaeda coordinated monthly service projects and ended
the school year with “Baskets of Sunshine.” The baskets were filled with Kleenex, bodywash,
applesauce, goldfish crackers, candy, etc. and tied with a yellow ribbon and attached the Bible
verse Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by
the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Jaeda credits Laura Christie,
Volunteer Coordinator for St. Luke Home Health and Hospice, her classmates, and club sponsor for the success of the Heart and Soul Club at Sumrall High School. Jaeda is the daughter of Jason and Jaclyn Goar and
granddaughter of Johnny and Mary Edwards and Judy Goar of Columbia.
