The American Legion Auxiliary is seeking donations of socks for veterans who are in need and is setting up donation baskets throughout the area.
Auxiliary President Alice Greenlee said the post will accept any and all donations for both men and women, but it is particularly needing large socks for older veterans with swollen feet.
“The vets that are in nursing homes, sometimes families can’t or don’t get them things that they need. The nursing home personnel has told us they could use a lot of socks,” Greenlee explained. “A military guy that is overseas would pray for a pair of clean socks during action. So we decided we would do this and help as many vets as we possibly can that’s in nursing homes or in the military, whichever one.
“We can use all we can get.”
Greenlee added the auxiliary’s mission is to help veterans in any way they can. It had been a long time since the auxiliary had its own post, but it has one now in Foxworth at 31 E. Marion St.
There will also be 20 to 25 baskets all around Marion County where people can drop off their donations, including at the auxiliary’s post at the old Methodist church. Those interested in donating socks can also contact Greenlee at (601) 818-1635 or Eula Blansett at (601) 441-1004. Greenlee said if socks are donated to any of the members of American Legion Post 90, the members would get them in the hands of the auxiliary.
