A Laurel man was arrested by the Marion County Sheriff's Office last week for allegedly beating a woman in Morgantown and chasing the victim into the street and continuing to strike her when she tried to get away.
On Feb. 11, deputies responded to a residence on Old Morgantown Road, where calls came in that a female could be heard screaming. However, when deputies arrived, they didn’t find anyone at the camper.
Deputies then received a second call from an address down the street where a woman was saying she had been assaulted. Deputies arrived and found a female with severe injuries to the right front of her head and face, as well as her hand.
The victim said she was at the Old Morgantown Road residence with Billy Smith, 40, of Laurel, who accused her of stealing something. Smith then allegedly slammed the victim’s head on the front porch and started kicking her in the head and face. She tried to leave on a bicycle, but he followed her and allegedly assaulted her again in the middle of Old Morgantown Road.
She was finally able to get away from Smith to make the call from another residence down the road.
Deputies placed Smith under arrest without further incident. Smith was charged with aggravated assault: use of a non-specified weapon, which carries a cash-only bond of $25,000. He already had an additional charge on his record for contempt for malicious mischief, which carries a cash-only bond of $421.75.
As of press time Tuesday, Smith remained in custody at the Marion County Regional Correctional Facility.
