HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior designated hitter Slade Wilks was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Tuesday for his play in the James Madison series for the Golden Eagles.
Wilks hit safely in the last two James Madison games, getting a pair of hits in each game.
The Columbia, Miss., product blasted a three-run homer in the Saturday contest to help extend the Golden Eagles' lead while also adding single. In the JMU finale, Wilks homered twice and tied a school-record for RBI in a game with eight as he connected on a three-run homer and a grand slam. The grand slam was the first one hit by a Southern Miss player since May of 2022.
Wilks and Christopher Sargent hit back-to-back homers twice during the game, after the duo did it twice during last season. His first of the eight RBI of the contest came via sacrifice fly.
For the week, Wilks belted three home runs and added 11 RBI. He leads the team in homers for the season with 14. He had an 11-game hitting streak snapped in the first game of the week at Alabama.
This is the first weekly honor for Wilks and fourth for the Golden Eagles this season as Matt Adams, Niko Mazza and Tanner Hall all garnered Pitcher of the Week award from the conference.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Ruston to play Louisiana Tech. Game time is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen via C-USA.TV or heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
