Columbia’s Amarion Fortenberry, a star cornerback and running back for the Wildcats, signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his career at the University of South Alabama Wednesday on National Signing Day 2023.
Fortenberry signed to be a defensive back for the Jaguars, where he racked up 56 tackles and eight tackles for loss with 12 pass breakups and six interceptions for the Wildcats this season. He also brought back two kicks for touchdowns with 380 return yards. The South Alabama signee is the only player that started on both the 2021 state championship team and the 2023 South State championship team.
“It’s always, going on to the next level like this, a big decision,” Fortenberry said following his Signing Day ceremony in the Columbia High auditorium Wednesday. “There’s a nervous feeling, but then again, it’s a blessing. Many people don’t get this opportunity, and I’m just blessed that I got this opportunity to sign a letter on National Signing Day.”
Fortenberry said that the love and support shown from the South Alabama coaching staff was what stood out to him in his decision-making process. He joins two former Marion County high school standouts in Kentrel Bullock from Columbia and Ka’ron Weary from East Marion.
