After beginning the season with one of their best starts in school history, the Lady Trojans have come back down to earth slightly while navigating their district schedule.
West Marion (13-7) only played once last week and couldn’t get out of its own way — or out of the way of men in striped shirts — as it fell behind in the district standings. The Lady Trojans dropped to 3-3 in Region 8-3A with a 45-39 loss to Tylertown on the road despite battling hard for all four quarters. However, they just couldn’t overcome their inability to finish at the rim and make free throws.
“We just didn’t execute. We had a perfect game plan,” head coach Calvin Newsome said. “We had some girls break down on defensive transitions. It was a great game though. I’m looking forward to playing them here (Feb. 1). I think we’ll get the victory here.”
Newsome added there were several questionable calls by the referees, but at the end of the day, the Lady Trojans still would have won if they executed better.
“It’s tough over there, but that’s what you expect when you go over there,” he said.
West Marion played host to Jeff Davis County Tuesday night, but results were unavailable at press time. It will host Perry Central Friday and Tylertown Tuesday before ending the regular season at St. Patrick Feb. 3.
The Region 8-3A Tournament will be played at Jeff Davis County the week of Feb. 7. West Marion can earn the second seed by winning out their remaining games, but it can also finish third or fourth if it loses one or two.
The Trojans (1-14, 0-6), meanwhile, lost to Tylertown by more than 40 points. They will likely be the last seed going into the district tournament.
