JACKSON — To observe National Fishing and Boating Week, today and Sunday have been designated as free fishing days, allowing all Mississippi residents to participate in sport fishing without a license, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. Also, fishing permits are not required for state fishing lakes and state park lakes.
July 4 is another designated free fishing day statewide, but fishing permits will be required for fishing at state fishing lakes or state park lakes on July 4.
Simpson Lake will reopen 6 a.m. Wednesday. The recently renovated 76-acre state fishing lake is located five miles north of Magee on Highway 49.
There is a slot limit on bass in effect at Simpson. Fish that measure within the 14- to 22-inch range must be released immediately, while one bass over 22 inches can be kept within the creel limit of 10 fish. Other limits: 15 for crappie, 20 for bluegill and redear sunfish combined, and 10 for catfish.
