A 3-year-old in the Expose community was accidentally shot in the head by her 6-year-old brother last week but is now in stable condition at University of Mississippi Medical Center.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday that the mother told them there is still a long recovery ahead, but the 3-year-old is improving.
The shooting happened at approximately 8 p.m. June 8 at 98 Ratliff Loop. Investigators learned the children were being watched by their grandmother while their mother was at work.
The brother was looking for candy in the grandmother’s bedroom when he came across the loaded gun. While playing with the gun, he unintentionally shot his sister, according to a press release issued by Sheriff Berkley Hall.
“Tragic examples like this remind us of the importance to secure firearms in the home and out of reach from children,” Hall said in the statement.
