A bad gas leak on N. Main Street will have the road closed for several hours at minimum. It is currently believed that a construction crew was attempting to replace a pole in the area and accidentally pierced a gas line, releasing strong fumes into the air.
A Deviney Construction crew was attempting to dig up a pole to replace it when the accident occurred, according to the Columbia Fire Department. While no injuries occurred, the gas odor is extremely strong in the area, and the fire department is strongly encouraging the public to keep a safe distance away from the area.
There are currently no CenterPoint Energy crews available to fix the leak, but a TL Wallace crew is en route from Brookhaven to repair it, according to Fire Chief Lyle Berard.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. Thursday.
