Foxworth Baptist Church and the Foxworth Sew & Sews awarded Quilts of Valor to three veterans on July 3 at Foxworth Baptist Church's Independence Day celebration.
Private First Class Charles A. “Lindy” Poole was awarded an honorary 300,000th Quilt of Valor. Lindy, a World War II veteran, joined the United States Marine Corps in 1941. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor and Johnston Island. Lindy was honorably discharged in 1946.
Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) groups and members across the U.S. have made almost 300,000 quilts total since 2018 when QOVF began tracking the number of Quilts of Valor created.
QOVF encouraged local Quilts of Valor groups to award an honorary 300,000th quilt to a veteran in their community to celebrate this milestone. There are more than 600 QOVF member groups with more than 10,000 members that create quilts and award them to veterans touched by war.
The group also presented quilts to Master Sergeant Jackie Magee, a Vietnam-era veteran who served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1988, and Senior Master Sergeant Jesse Elmore, a Vietnam veteran who serve in the Air Force from 1967 to 1988. Magee and Elmore also received the Vietnam Veteran lapel pin to recognize, thank and honor U.S. military veterans who served on active duty during the Vietnam War period.
QOVF’s mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. These quilts are awarded during ceremonies where veterans are honored for their service.
QOVF was founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, who had a dream where a soldier who was distressed was comforted by a quilt. This dream was the inspiration and basis for a Quilts of Valor. Roberts began a grassroots effort enlisting volunteers to create and award Quilts of Valor that has grown into a national movement today.
