A late Monday night, early Tuesday morning fire resulted in the death of a Marion County woman.
Mary Johns, 69, was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning at the scene on Harrison Johnson Drive, which involved four units, and completely destroyed the unit Johns was in.
The call was received at 11:55 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30, and was reported as an apartment fire. Upon arriving on scene the apartment was fully engulfed with a person trapped inside. While Johns’ apartment was fully engulfed, three other units also received damage. Members from South Marion, Pine Burr and Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Departments, along with Civil Defense, State Fire Marshall’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and coroner Jessie Graham all responded to the scene.
Civil Defense Manager Aaron Greer said the State Fire Marshall’s Office was called in to investigate, but it appears the fire was accidental.
