Columbia officials continued working to clean up blighted properties across the city, taking action on nearly two dozen Tuesday night.
Building Inspector Lonnie Stringer addressed the Board of Aldermen, which learned several of the concerns from last month had already been addressed and took action on demolition of others.
Two properties off of Owens Street were discussed by the board as needing cleaning and demolition of two structures.
“409 Conner needs a resolution for a demo,” Stringer told the board. “413 is needs a demo, but it also needs cleaned.”
Ward 3 Alderwoman Anna Evans said one of the structures needed demolished first.
“The one that has already fallen in should go first,” she said. “They both should be demos.”
The board approved demolition of the home at 409 Conner Ave. and cleaning the lot at 413 Conner.
Another concern is the lot of the former Pioneer Aerospace, where buildings have been torn down off of West Church Street in the area behind City Hall. The Board voted to approve a resolution to have the lot mowed and cleaned. The board also voted in favor of a mow-and-clean resolution for 612 High School Ave. and 216 Arkansas Ave. No action was taken on a resolution for 435 Lafayette St. because the owner has begun to clean the property and was given 90 days. Owners of a property at 704 Alberta will also be sent a resolution ordering the cleanup of the property.
Stringer said three properties on the list had been cleaned since the last meeting, 420 Pearl St., 1212 Broad St. and 1721 Barnes Ave.
Under new business, the board approved setting hearings for next month on properties including:
- 406 Short Owens, demolition.
- 202 S. High School Ave., mow and clean.
- 515 S. High School Ave., mow and clean.
- 1209 Meadowood Road, mow and clean.
- 1399 Benjamin Street, mow and clean.
- Former carwash on Mississippi 13 North, mow and clean.
- 610 Oak Ave., mow and clean.
- 217 George Drive, mow and clean.
The hearings have been set for the 4 p.m. Nov. 20 meeting at City Hall.
