A Columbia native is now a three-time Best-in-Show artist at Jackson State University.
Dorothy Jones Williams is part of the 1976 class of Columbia High School and graduated magna cum laude from Jackson State University on Dec. 6. She is the daughter of Willie Mae Oatis of Columbia.
While attending the Art Institute of Houston in Houston, Texas, it was discovered that Williams had a couple of brain tumors, one of which was causing her brain to swell. Following surgery to remove the tumors, she moved back to Mississippi and worked on her bachelor’s degree in studio fine arts at JSU, where she finished with a 3.74 GPA.
Williams said her love is art. Some of her work is currently on display at the JSU Downtown Jackson Gallery One and also has been exhibited at the Mississippi Museum of Art. When she won Best-in-Show this last year at the JSU Juried Student Art Competition, she said she set the record as the artist to win the award the most.
