Next weekend will be an educational, fun-filled weekend at the John Ford Home with the annual encampment in Sandy Hook.
The encampment will start Friday, Sept. 13 as a day open for school groups to come and tour.
There will be reenactments throughout Saturday and Sunday including re-enactors from Wirt Adams Mississippi Calvary; Standford, Mississippi Federal Battery Artillery; Seven Stars Artillery from the Gulf Coast; Louisiana Federal Infantry; 9th Connecticut Federal Infantry and Alabama Confederate Infantry.
The encampment was originally scheduled in February this year but was canceled due to the weather.
The activities include on Saturday:
9 a.m. Open to the public
10 a.m. Military drills and marching
11 a.m. Talk and book signing by Tony Turnbrow, author of “Hardened to Hickory-The Missing Chapter in Andrew Jackson’s Life”
Noon lunch break
1 p.m. Military inspection of troops
2 p.m. Battle and salute
3 p.m. Ladies tea with refreshments, games and fan language
4 p.m. Encampment closes for the day.
On Sunday the events planned include:
9 a.m. Open to the public
10 a.m. Church service at Paynes Chapel on the grounds
11 a.m. Military drills and marching
Noon lunch break
1 p.m. Military inspection of troops
2 p.m. Battle and salute
3 p.m. Break camp.
In additions to the various activities there will also be tours of the home and Payne Chapel and vendors.
The John Ford Home is the oldest home in the county, some believing it dates back to 1792. Throughout its history it has been used as a home, post office, held the first and second Methodist Conferences and has been a part of more than one military campaigns.
The Encampment is being sponsored by the Marion County Historical Society.
