A former Marion County chief deputy has been arrested on four drug charges.
Jeffrey Carl Broom, 47, turned himself in to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Thursday and posted a $9,000 bond.
A Marion County grand jury handed down a four-count indictment Dec. 27. Broom has been put on administrative leave with pay from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, where he has worked since December 2016.
The alleged crimes took place when Broom was employed in Marion County. He resigned as chief deputy on Sept. 23, 2016.
According to the indictment, Broom allegedly took a prescription drug, Alprazolam, from the Marion County Narcotics Task Force on Sept. 2, 2016. The second count alleges tampering with evidence related to that drug.
Counts III and IV in the indictment allege the possession of less than 100 dosage units of Diazapam and less than 100 units of Clonazepam on that same date.
A news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the department was conducting its own internal investigation into the matter.
