While the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the grandest of plans and ruined many birthday celebrations, one Columbia youngster got the joy of celebrating a modified party last week.
Davis Rayborn, son of Jay and Emily Rayborn, celebrated his fifth birthday last Tuesday at home in Columbia with his family.
But on Friday morning he got treated to a birthday parade in front of his house, complete with his best friends, presents and Jefferson Middle School’s Walter the Wildcat mascot.
The mom of one of his friends came up with the idea and posted about it on Facebook to spread the word.
Emily said Davis knew about the parade, but he didn’t truly understand what was going to be happening and was blown away by the turnout. There were between 12 and 15 vehicles led by Jessie Williamson in an 18-wheeler, which Davis said was his favorite part.
“He was laughing and smiling and waving at everybody. He thought it was really cool to see all of his friends riding by,” Emily said.
His friends even threw birthday gifts and hand-drawn cards to Davis.
Emily said it was awesome to have all of Davis’ friends come together during this difficult time to commemorate a milestone he’ll only have once.
“That’s the best part about living in a small town. It’s everybody coming together when things like this happen,” she said. “It made me really excited for him to see his friends celebrate his birthday.”
While not being able to have a normal birthday party could be potentially upsetting for a 5-year-old, Emily said Davis understands they’re not allowed to go anywhere and wasn’t distraught at all about the circumstances.
At home last Tuesday, the Rayborns celebrated Davis’ big day with homemade cake, ice cream and presents.
Certainly it will always be a birthday he’ll never forget.
