The Columbia Rotary Club normally honors its scholarship recipients with an awards luncheon each spring, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans.
Instead Scholarship Committee Chairman Gary Smyly traveled to each of Marion County’s four high schools Tuesday to present the checks to the seniors.
Winners this year included Columbia Academy’s Tate Duncan, Columbia High’s Elizabeth Knight, East Marion’s Nyirah Barnes and West Marion’s Caley Thornhill.
The Rotary Club, which has operated in Columbia since 1923 as part of the international service organization, presents the scholarships annually. Other members of the committee that select the recipients, in addition to Smyly, include Eddie Ray Breakfield, Ken Knopp, Stan Gwin, Roy Dearman and Tom Porter.
