While the shelter-in-place order remains, more people are staying home due to COVID-19. But every once in a while a person just might need something. Instead of traveling back in town, many in Marion County are visiting the little country stores closer to home.
Tables at those stores are empty, which once had people sitting around visiting and watching customers go in and out all day.
But Grant Grisham, owner of Regan’s General Store in Cheraw, said people are still coming in regularly.
“It has been steady,” he said.
Grisham said the weekends have been a little bit slower because people are not out and about after attending church services, and he has noticed a lot of people are using this time to fish.
He said they have been very proactive in cleaning the door handles, counters and gas pumps. He said they have always tried to be clean but now are taking extra steps to ensure everything is clean. In addition they have a grill section, including tables, for meals, but they are only doing carry-out orders now.
Amy Hilton, who owns Kat’s Grocery in Morgantown, said people are not lingering like they normally do.
“They are getting what they need and leaving,” she said.
But Hilton said business is remaining steady. Kat’s Grocery has also changed its grill to carry-out only.
The hot items at Kat’s, Hilton said, are fishing supplies and oil. Hilton said she is having a hard time keeping up with all of the fishing supplies.
Both Grisham and Hilton said it is taking longer for them to receive products, which currently is the biggest issue they are having.
The shelter-in-place order began in Mississippi on April 3 and continues at least to April 20.
