More than half a dozen people were injured in four separate accidents beginning Saturday afternoon and ending Monday night.
An accident late Monday afternoon left a driver hospitalized at Forrest General Hospital, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Around 5:15 p.m. firefighters from the Foxworth, Southwest Marion and Morgantown volunteer fire departments responded to Mississippi 586 near the Walthall County line for a report of a one-vehicle crash with entrapment.
A vehicle driven by Diane Haggard Cothern of Jayess left the road headed westbound and traveled through a ditch and struck an embankment.
“The vehicle overturned on the driver’s side,” MHP Master Sgt. Brent Barfield said. “The accident occurred about eight miles west of Foxworth in the Darbun Community.”
Firefighters freed Cothern from the wreckage of her 2009 Kia Optima and set up a landing zone at a nearby chicken farm where the Baptist Lifeflight 4 helicopter landed to transport her to the hospital. AAA Ambulance personnel treated her at the scene. Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies also assisted the MHP in the investigation and with traffic control.
Shortly before the crash on Mississippi 586, Columbia Police Department officers, Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies, AAA Ambulance Service personnel and Columbia Fire Department firefighters worked a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 98 East near Woodlawn Church.
A 2002 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Daysha Moneh Wilson of Columbia reportedly turned left from eastbound U.S. 98 into the path of an SUV driven by Jeremy Matthew Bracey of Foxworth.
“He tried to avoid the collision but still made contact,” CPD Capt. Johnny Barnes said. “His vehicle rolled over in the ditch off of the eastbound lane near the Deck.”
According to Barnes, two passengers in the vehicle were taken to Marion General Hospital to be checked for injuries, Danielle Bracey and a child.
In an earlier accident on Mississippi 35 north near the Jefferson Davis County line, three people were injured according to an MHP report.
Alexous Miller of Sandy Hook was turning left into a driveway in her Chrysler 300 and pulled into the path of a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Samuel Saulters of Prentiss. He and his passenger, Kathleen Saulters, were transported to Forrest General Hospital. The Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and treated the injured along with AAA Ambulance Service Personnel. Two ambulances were brought to the scene.
On Saturday afternoon around 6:10 p.m., Tri-Community was dispatched to U.S. 98 East near Wesley Road for a rollover accident with entrapment. Firefighters worked to free a Columbia man from the wreckage before he was taken to the hospital.
A report from the MHP was not immediately available as of deadline Tuesday, so the name of the individual wasn’t confirmed. Reports at the scene indicated that the man was eastbound in a Lincoln Town Car when his vehicle left the roadway, struck the pavement of a turning bay and rolled several times. The vehicle ended up facing west in the westbound lanes of U.S. 98.
All of the accidents remain under investigation.
