The daily tallies from the state Health Department showed a slight decline in the number of new coronavirus cases this week in Mississippi.
New cases reported by the state peaked at 300 on April 19 and averaged 219 cases per day this week (Sunday through Thursday).
Also, the number of COVID-19 patients on ventilators in Mississippi hospitals has dropped from a high of 103 on April 15 to 72 as of Wednesday.
As of press deadlines Thursday, Mississippi’s total COVID-19 cases since March 11 stood at 6,815, with 261 deaths. There have been 93 deaths of long-term care facility residents, which accounts for 36% of the state total.
Marion County had 72 total identified cases and six deaths as of Thursday.
The state Health Department this week began reporting the number of people who were hospitalized with the disease and have recovered.
The state said 3,413 formerly hospitalized patients have recovered so far.
It’s unknown how many people have had the disease and recovered without being hospitalized.
