The Columbia Board of Aldermen held discussions Tuesday about homes and properties being neglected.
Mayor Justin McKenzie discussed how the property values of the surrounding properties are affected by the dilapidated homes and land that is left unattended. Homes left abandoned and neglected opens the door for vandalism, drug dealing and all kinds of crime, McKenzie said.
“We work so hard to keep our city clean. We want our citizens to take pride in their city,” he said.
McKenzie stressed how maintaining your property upholds the image of the community and the integrity of the entire town. When the properties are clean, it improves the quality of life.
“If you know someone is elderly or a shut-in, be a neighbor and help them out.” McKenzie said.
McKenzie said Building Inspector Carrie Thornhill loses much valuable time investigating the neglected properties that should be focused on building inspections.
Alderman Mike Smith acknowledged that there have been two tickets for $1,000 issued for litter. He said it doesn’t matter if it is a good area or not, people keep littering and it is time for it to stop.
At the board meeting, Thornhill received approval for resolutions to mow and clean the following:
• 704 Alberta Ave.
• 709 Alberta Ave.
• 406 Short Owens St.
Thornhill reported the properties which have been cleaned:
• 1102 Carolyn Ave.
• 1108 Carolyn Ave.
• 1110 Carolyn Ave.
• 517 Church St.
• 906 Church St.
• 1010 Gill St.
• 811 N. Park Ave.
No actions was taken on 414 and 418 Owens St. Alderwoman Anna Evans reported the properties have been bush hogged but the grass was still high.
“If you bush hog the property but there are still vines growing on the house, you haven’t really cleaned it,” she said.
