Susan Amundson returned to The Columbian-Progress this week in a new role — managing editor.
The Foxworth resident previously worked at the newspaper from 2009 to 2016 in production and now will be leading the newsroom.
“We’re excited to have Susan rejoin our staff, and I’m confident that she’s going to excel in this role,” Editor and Publisher Charlie Smith said. “It’s great to hire someone with a deep love for this community and who already has a working knowledge of our interal procedures. I hope the community will join me in welcoming Susan in this new endeavor.”
“Marion County has been my home for 11 years and as each day goes by I become more and more attached this county,” Amundson said. “There has been a lot of great changes in Columbia and the county and I have enjoyed being a part of it and looking to continue to be a part of it now in a bigger way in my role with The Columbian-Progress. I have met a lot of wonderful people when I previously worked here and I am looking forward to meeting more.”
Amundson was born and raised in Maryland and moved to Mississippi in 1998. She has been living in Marion County since 2008. She and her husband, Jeff, have a total of seven children between them, and the youngest two are still at home and are students at West Marion High School. They attend Mt. Carmel Church of God, where Susan serves as the church secretary and sings on the praise team. She also volunteers with the Southwest Marion Volunteer Fire Department and is trained as a first responder.
“Growing up I was one of those who could never make up their minds what they wanted to do as an adult, but writing and photography are two things I love to do so in a sense this is my dream job,” she said. “I want to see Marion County, the City of Columbia and The Columbian-Progress to grow and continue to flourish, and I hope I get to be a lasting part of all of it.”
