A conference designed to give men spiritual guidance will celebrate its sixth anniversary in August and will now rotate between different congregations.
The annual “Men Moving Forward in the 21st Century” is set for Aug. 18 at the Second Springhill District building in Sandy Hook, and President Loran Pigott hopes a good crowd will help the event continue to grow.
“We had good attendance last year and over the years, the group has grown to more than 80 people,” he said. “We have a variety of pastors and speakers coming to share on a variety of topics. They will share their ideals to make us better men.”
This year’s moderator is the Rev. Timothy Magee of New Damascus Church. The keynote address will be given by the Rev. Terrance August of Wesley Ray, Mary’s Chapel and Live Oaks Methodist churches in Louisiana.
The theme of the conference this year is “Equipping men to embrace their God-given roles in the church, the home, and the world,” according to Pigott.
The first session is titled “Life is tougher for Christian men,” and will be led by the Rev. Donald Aaron of New Harvest Ministry in Columbia. The second session, “What happens when a man talks to God about his problems,” will be led by the Rev. Reginald Russell of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. The third session will be led by the Rev. Deonardo Scott of First Missionary Baptist Church Handsboro and is titled, “God left us a helper – the Holy Spirit and there is no charge.”
Praise and worship testimonies will be presented by the St. James Male Chorus.
“It had always been held at First Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church,” Pigott said. “We decided to rotate among the churches and that is why the new location. The Sunday service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 19 at First Mt. Bethel Church, located at 6 Mt. Bethel Loop in Sandy Hook. The Second Springhill Building is located of Mississippi Highway 35 in Sandy Hook.
“It’s free,” Pigott said. “We hope a lot of men will show up. We’ll begin with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and then the conference begins at 8 a.m. The sessions will go through about 1 p.m. We’re really looking forward to it.”
The speaker for the Sunday service will be the Rev. Terry Weems of New Life Fellowship in Columbia.
