Columbia lost one if its longtime businesswomen last week.
Gayle Reid, 78, died Saturday at Forrest General Hospital following a motor vehicle accident on Thursday, Oct. 3 in Hattiesburg.
According to Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Travis Luck, Mrs. Reid was driving west in a Nissan Murano on U.S. 98 around 8:30 p.m. when she attempted to make a left turn. She was struck by a Ford passenger vehicle traveling east. Witnesses said while the light was green when Reid made the turn, the green turn arrow was not lit, according to the Highway Patrol.
Services for Mrs. Reid were at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hathorn Funeral Home.
Mrs. Reid was the owner of G & S Rentals since 1986 and started G & S Tax Service in 1992. G & S was located on Main Street for years, but in 2018 moved about a block away to Courthouse Square.

Former Columbia Mayor Reed Houston posted, “I have known Gayle Reid and her family it seems like my whole life. And I can tell you she will be missed. Prayers for the family.”
Misty Ellis said, “I received the sad and shocking news today that my longtime friend/client, Mrs. Gayle Reid passed! I always thought she was invincible! I know that she is safe and sound in the arms of Jesus!”
A member of First Baptist Church of Columbia, Mrs. Reid loved spending time with her children, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, and her dog, Sugar Baby, according to her obituary. She was a member and treasurer of the Marion County Eastern Star Chapter No. 94, enjoyed bowling and was involved in equestrian exhibits.
Mrs. Reid was preceded in death by her husband, Sedgie Reid Jr., and is survived by four daughters, two sons, 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
