City Building Inspector Lonnie Stringer always has a long list of properties in need of demolition or cleaning, and Tuesday’s meeting was no exception.
The Columbia Board of Aldermen heard about 17 properties and took a variety of actions, from scheduling hearings to sending resolution letters to property owners.
The board learned from Stringer that four properties on the list from previous meetings had been cleaned: 719 Church St., 818 Graymont Drive, 906 Church St. and 338 Hawkins Ave.
A hearing was scheduled for a property to be mowed and cleaned at 321 Hawkins Ave., but no one was present representing the property. The board voted to clean the property and charge it off to the taxes.
The Board also scheduled hearings for mowing and cleaning properties located at:
• 420 Pearl St.
• 612 High School Ave.
• 1212 Broad St.
• 704 Alberta Ave.
• 1024 Glenmoor Ave.
• Old Pioneer Building
• 1721 Barnes Ave.
The Board also delayed action on a property located at 1405 N. Main St. for a demolition. The drafted resolutions for mowing and cleaning properties located at:
• 1023 Church St.
• A lot on Avenue D.
• 412 Bay Ave.
The board will also hold a hearing for a demolition of a property at 435 Lafayette St. next month.
In other action Tuesday night, the board:
• Approved the resignation of Forrest Cawley as a full-time firefighter. He will remain on the roster as a part-time firefighter.
• Approved sending TAC Officer Deanna Expose to training in Pearl from Sept. 17 to Sept. 21.
• Approved sending dispatcher Katelin Holman to a state recertification course.
• Approved acceptance of a $6,286.50 grant for body armor and active shooter kits for the police department.
• Approved acceptance of an $11,940 public safety grant, which will help the department pay for a radar unit and overtime for traffic enforcement.
• Voted to send letters commending business owners downtown for painting and renovation of buildings.
• Hired Katie Richardson as a part-time animal control officer.
The Board of Aldermen’ s next regularly scheduled meeting is set for 4 p.m. Sept. 4 at City Hall.
