The Mississippi Municipal League will be awarding Columbia the Excellence Award for Public Safety at its upcoming annual conference, it announced this week.
The honor is based on community involvement, youth programs regarding public safety, efforts to improve the safety and security of the city, disaster response programs and law enforcement, fire and emergency response programs, according to the Municipal League.
Achaia Moore, who is over the Excellence Award with the Municipal League, said seven applications were submitted for this award and the application received from Columbia stood out, especially regarding police involvement with the community. She said the judges were very impressed with the application.
Columbia won the award for cities with populations less than 10,000. The award will be presented June 26 at the 88th annual Municipal League Conference in Biloxi.
