Marion County’s takeover of garbage services begins Monday, and supervisors want residents to be aware of the changes.
According to District 2 Supervisor Terry Broome, trucks will roll from the Marion County Transfer Station beginning at 7 a.m. Monday headed on their routes.
Recently, Marion County purchased three new garbage trucks and each truck will have a crew of three people. Marion County hired 10 people for its garbage service including drivers for each truck, two hoppers for each truck and a supervisor for the operation, Anthony Preston.
Broome said the first pickups Monday will be in Beat 1.
“Each supervisor will be responsible for their beat,” he said. “They’ll be responsible for their garbage and will communicate with the garbage supervisor and let him know of any problems. The garbage supervisor has a pickup truck, and he’ll be following them for a while to make sure the routes are followed. He will get any problems corrected.”
Broome said the county’s customers will notice one thing about the service.
“Once a route is run, it will be run that way consistently – every time,” he said. “It will not vary.”
“We’ll have three trucks working every day,” Broome said. “We also have a spare truck, one of our old ones. We can always put it into service if we have any breakdowns. If we have a breakdown, there shouldn’t be any delays.”
Broome said county officials appreciated the flexibility of Waste Pro during the transition, which has taken longer than anticipated due to an extended bid process and the time to have the trucks completed.
“We appreciate and thank Waste Pro for their cooperation,” he said. “They have worked with us in every way they could. They’ve met every need we’ve had of them. We appreciate that.”
