The Marion County school board worked through a busy agenda of items Sept. 10.
The board approved a number of fundraisers, field trips and policies, while also discussing personnel and 16th Section lands.
During the course of the meeting, which lasted a little more than an hour, the board approved 13 fundraisers for various school activities before addressing other items.
Personnel-wise, the board approved several recommendations including Becky Peavy as a payroll/benefits clerk, Donald Fortenberry as a custodian at the Marion County Carl Loftin Career and Technical Center, Susan Hoxie with the Save the Children Program at East Marion, Vicki Sims as a tutor for the East Marion Save the Children after school program, Brenda Pittman and Ann Shoemaker as after school bus drivers for Save the Children and Larry Jenkins Jr. as a volunteer assistant football coach at East Marion.
At its Aug. 13 meeting, the board also handled several personnel items, including the resignation of Nicole Bass as payroll/insurance clerk and resignation of Helen Carney as a school bus driver. The board also approved the employment of Gwen Battle as speech pathologist, Jack Andrews as a seasonal part-time employee for football, Gabriel Ball as a part-time seasonal employee for football and Chris Watts as a certified teacher at East Marion.
The board also approved a $1,770.99 single-source purchase from Phonak for a hearing system and approved a homecoming parade for West Marion High School. The Board also approved the 2018-19 basketball schedules for East and West Marion and several field trips out-of-state, including one to the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans for West Marion High School in March 2019 and a West Marion band trip to Mobile, Ala., in October.
The board also approved four 16th Section Land lease amendments and approved a new lease.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Marion County School District Board of Education is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at its offices on Mississippi 13 North in Columbia.
