As Mississippi has been slowly returning to normal, the numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases are seeing an increase.
On Tuesday the cases across the state were 22,898, an increase of 3,099 cases in one week. The state is now at 989 deaths.
Marion County has also seen an influx of cases as well, including 51 cases in the same time frame. In addition, Marion County also had its 10th death this past week.
The good news is that while the number of confirmed cases are high, so are the number of recovered patients. A total of 17,242 individuals who had the virus are considered recovered. That’s a 75.2% recovery rate versus a 4.3% death rate.
The number of black deaths has continued to exceed those of whites. The state Health Department reports 486 black Mississippians have died compared to 387 whites and 40 American Indians/Alaska natives. In Marion County the death totals are equally split with five blacks and five whites.
There has not been a new long-term health care facility case in Marion County in June.
A “safe return” order set by Gov. Tate Reeves is set to expire Monday. It allows for all businesses to reopen but requires 50% capacity and limits the number of people at gatherings. Reeves could still decide this week to extend that order.
