Democratic candidates for statewide office will be in Marion County Saturday night for the annual Beans and Greens Dinner.
They include U.S. Senate candidates David Baria and Mike Espy along with 4th Congressional District candidate Jeramey Anderson.
The event, hosted by the Marion County Democratic Executive Committee, begins with a meet and greet at 6 p.m. Saturday and dinner at 7 in the Community Room at the BusinessPlex.
“This is our annual fundraising dinner and our annual fundraising dinner and it serves a dual purpose,” the Rev. Darrick McGowan of the Democratic Executive Committee said. “Beans and Greens was originally brought about by Democrats as a potluck dinner where everyone brought something and it needed to contain beans and some type of greens. We continue that tradition, but we also use it as a fundraiser to help support activities that we provide for the county and surrounding area.”
McGowan said 10th Chancery Court District judicial candidate Vanessa Jones will also be there along with live entertainment and door prizes.
The BusinessPlex Community Room is a new venue for the dinner.
“We are drawing bigger crowds every year,” McGowan said. “We started off a little small, but we are expecting 200 to 225 people and hopefully as the word gets out it will increase because we want this event to build each and every year and be a highlight of events in Marion County.”
Tickets are $20 and for more information contact McGowan at (504) 231-7763 or email dmcgowan75@yahoo.com.
“During this event, we will share ideas for galvanizing, motivating and canvassing,” he concluded. “There will be a dialogue on current issues relevant to you and your community.”
