A man who lives near the Marion-Walthall county line remains in jail after allegedly fleeing arrest in a stolen car at speeds of up to 120 mph before crashing near Kokomo Road.
Dusty Lewis Turner, 39, remains jailed on $6,000 bond in connection with the incident that took place Feb. 8. Turner is charged with grand larceny of a motor vehicle and driving under the influence (first offense).
He was taken into custody by officers after he lost control of his vehicle on Kokomo Road near U.S. 98 by Reagan’s Corner. He had fled officers in Tylertown.
Turner allegedly stole a silver Kia Optima, and Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies had information it was in the Tylertown area. According to reports, Tylertown officer Josh McCallum spotted the vehicle heading east on U.S. 98. The officer then began following the vehicle at the intersection of 98 and Mississippi 583 and confirmed that it was the car Marion County authorities were seeking. As he attempted to stop it, Turner fled and McCallum was joined by officers from Tylertown and the Walthall County Sheriff’s Office. The pursuit reached speeds of up to 120 mph as it entered Marion County.
As Turner attempted to turn on Kokomo Road, he lost control of his vehicle, rolling it several times. Cars and traffic in the area limited the pursuing officers’ vision, and they were unable to see the car in the ditch and continued past the accident.
In the meantime, Turner walked away from the vehicle and walked toward Reagan’s, but he was taken into custody by Marion and Walthall county deputies, Tylertown officers, including Chief Brandon Bright, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Turner remained in the Marion County Jail as of Monday awaiting the next step in the legal process. He could face additional charges.
