A hit-and-run accident led to the arrest of a Columbia man on drug charges.
Larell Danta Abrams, 34, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, crack cocaine, marijuana, hydrocodone and Xanax and was awaiting bond in Marion County Justice Court as of deadline. According to his booking card, Abrams was booked in on possession with intent to sell the Schedule I and II drugs.
Friday about 11:30 p.m., the Columbia Police Department received a report of a hit-and-run accident at the Hendricks Street Apartments. According to a police report, the caller stated that a silver older model Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Marquis had left the scene headed for Dukes Avenue.
Sgt. Jason Cook observed a car on Owens Street matching the description and stopped it.
Cook then made contact with Abrams, who was the driver, and questioned him about the incident. According to the report, officers detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A search of the car revealed several different controlled substances in the passenger area and in the trunk.
Abrams was arrested for possession of the controlled substances and was transported to the Marion County Jail. As he was being booked in at the jail, officers discovered more controlled substances hidden on his body.
In addition to the various drugs, a considerable amount of cash was also recovered.
