A traffic stop on Lumberton Road by Columbia Police Department officers yielded a variety of drugs, a stolen gun and two arrests Saturday afternoon.
CPD Capt. Johnny Barnes said police charged Calvin Bernard Guy, 28, of Tylertown, with a variety of offenses and picked up passenger Niketa McGowan, 22, of Columbia, on a warrant.
Judge Gwen Broom set Guy’s bond at $75,000 Monday in Marion County Justice Court. He faces several possession of a controlled substance charges including a possession with intent to deliver, while in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and his initial warrant for contempt of court. He remained in jail as of Tuesday morning.
“Officer Andrew Reid pulled a traffic stop for a minor violation on Lumberton Road,” Barnes said. “He (Guy) was being stopped for a tint violation. The stop was made near the Circle K, and instead of just pulling over, they pulled up to the storefront. When he made contact, officer Reid smelled burning marijuana coming out of the vehicle.”
Sgt. David Ezell and officer Seth Blackmon responded to back Reid up and Reid then spoke with the driver (Guy).
“He asked the driver if there was any marijuana in the vehicle,” Barnes said. “Guy told him to look and actually gave him consent to look. During the process they also discovered that Mr. Guy and Ms. McGowan also had active warrants through our department. They were initially arrested for that.”
Barnes said Guy signed a consent form allowing police to search the vehicle, which yielded much more than they were expecting.
“Officers went through the process and uncovered a weapon, ecstasy, oxycodone, valium, weed, some thyroid medicine, which is an abused medicine, and more,” Barnes said. “After the arrests were made, the vehicle was released to the owner and Mr. Guy was transported to the Marion County Jail. It was also discovered that the weapon (a Jimenez 9mm pistol) was reported stolen out of Bogalusa.”
Already facing a plethora of charges, Guy added one more charge while being booked into the jail.
“During the process, he was found to be concealing a pill bottle on his person,” Barnes said. “It contained cocaine, meth and more oxycodone.”
Barnes said McGowan was charged with the warrant on her, which according to a jail booking card was simple assault by threat. She posted 10 percent of a $1,000 surety bond and was released.
Barnes said Guy would be scheduled to face a preliminary hearing soon. He also commended the officers for their work.
“They did an outstanding job,” he concluded.
