Don’t dump your household trash in the Columbia Water Park’s bins, county officials say. If you do, you might have to load it back up.
District 2 Supervisor Terry Broome, whose district includes the Park, said he and park employees are monitoring the situation after a recent incident.
“We saw someone come into the park and drive up to a garbage can and take out bags of trash from his truck and drop them in,” he said. “We have enough garbage out there without people dumping theirs. The Water Park is not the place for people to bring household garbage.”
Broome said one of the people caught dumping was approached and made to pick up his bags and take them and warned about continuing. He said he and other county employees will continue to watch the park.
It was a busy morning for the Marion County Board of Supervisors as the March work session began Monday as the Board heard from a number of people and discussed several topics as they met at their offices on Courthouse Square.
Rhonda Bradley from the Department of Human Services spoke to the Board about the new location of one of the offices, which moved last year to the building on U.S. 98 that houses the Mississippi Department of Employment Services.
“We love the new location,” she told the Board. “It’s great. People find it easy to locate us. However, we still have an issue with flooding for the old building (near the Marion –Walthall Correctional Facility). I called them this morning and told them that spring is coming and we need to be prepared for flooding. They are preparing and making sure things are off the floor for when heavy rains come.”
Andy Turnage of Pileum, the county’s IT consultant, addressed the Board about the need for several system upgrades.
“We can’t upgrade the current Justice Court system with the current hardware and software,” he said. “This is the system that is used for tickets. They’ve been manually moving the tickets over and are facing charges of $75 a week from the company that processes them. Those charges began this month. We would need a new AS-400 system and very few people sell them.”
The Board asked Turnage to bring them quotes on the software and equipment and a decision will be made on the upgrades needed.
In other action, the Board:
• Approved a lease transfer at the BusinessPlex for J.T. Haynes, the new owner of QAS alarm systems, which has offices at the complex.
