As COVID-19 cases in Marion County hit the 100 mark this week, plans are still being affected by the pandemic.
With the safer-at home order still in place, the annual Memorial Day service at the Marion County Courthouse is being postponed with plans to be held at a later date.
Also delayed is the annual event honoring law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Another event in danger of not happening is Freedom Fest. The last few years, Freedom Fest has been a big draw for the city and county as thousands of people come downtown for the event held near Independence Day. The event featured all kinds of booths, food, activities, last year a concert and always ended with a fireworks show. With the current executive order only allowing for 20 people in an outdoor gathering, Jacob Harrison with Experience Columbia LLC said this year isn’t looking good and no plans have been made as of this time.
On Thursday, the total number of confirmed cases was exactly at 100. As of Wednesday, Marion General Hospital had six confirmed cases of the coronavirus, but none were in the ICU.
Gov. Tate Reeves in his daily briefing on Thursday introduced Patrick Sullivan as chairman of the State Workforce Investment Board. The board is designed to help with workforce training to enable employees to earn higher pay.
Mississippi reported an unprecedented 203,000 new unemployment claims from March 15 to April 25, according to reports in Mississippi Today during the current pandemic.
