American Legion Post 90 and the Cub Scouts are teaming together to properly retired tattered U.S. flags.
The preferred method of retiring a flag is by burning it, according to the United States Flag Code. In conjunction with Flag Day, which is Friday, American Legion Post 90 and the Cub Scouts will be holding a retirement ceremony for the flags on Saturday beginning near 9 a.m. at the Columbia Water Park.
According to Marion County Veterans Service Officer Dewey Blansett, there will be a short ceremony that will take place prior to the flags being retired. Blansett said he has received more than 50 flags and is expecting more.
Flag Day was declared by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and President Harry S. Truman signed the Act of Congress declaring June 14 as National Flag Day.
If you have a flag that needs to be retired, call Blansett at (601) 736-0740 or Bill Harris, American Legion Post 90 commander, at (601) 441-1638.
