Sunday evening at 6 p.m. Emmanuel Baptist Church on Old Mississippi 35 North will host former head of the Southern Baptist Convention Fred Luter.
Luter is the senior pastor at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans and served as the 60th president of the denomination. Both in 2012 and 2013 Luter was unanimously elected to serve as the leader of the nation’s largest protestant denomination. He was the first African-American elected to the post.
As pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, he has seen the church grow from 65 members when he first started preaching there in 1986 to now over 7,000. In December 2018, the church moved into its new, 3,500-seat sanctuary, and the church now offers separate teenage and children services.
Emmanuel’s pastor, Lloyd Thompson, said Luter spoke at the church last year. He said not many people came, and he is hoping this year more people will be interested in hearing Luter.
The following Sunday morning, Nov. 3, Chuck Kelly, former president of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, will be speaking at the church.
Kelly was the eighth president and held the position for 23 years before retiring in July.
He is now the Distinguished Research Professor of Evangelism and President Emeritus.
