Colonial Funeral Home is currently going through renovations to transform the funeral home to bring it to a higher level of elegance. In the process to upgrade, it will be a combination of using the old and the new.
Walking through the front door an immediate difference is noted. The area is more open with more seating and a more designated area for families to sit to visit or just to take a breather from the visitation and/or funeral. The main building has all new carpet throughout, and special chandeliers have been ordered.
The antique lamps used on each side of the casket will continue to be used. Funeral Home Director Danny Jackson said the lamps are no longer made. He said he tried to look for them and haven’t found them. However, there are new pieces of furniture already in place and more is on the way, Jackson said.
“We are trying to make it as perfect as possible for the families,” Jackson said.
The original building burned down in the early part of the 1900s, and additions have been made to the structure, including adding a chapel.
There will be more changes coming, Jackson said, including to the outside and to the chapel. A new sound system will be installed, and the chapel will be updated as well. Jackson said one of the things he is working on is adding exquisite pieces of art on the inside. He wants to make the place a showcase for fine art.
The renovations began in 2018, and Jackson said it will probably take at least another year before everything is completed.
