A Foxworth man serving as an inmate trustee on a garbage truck through the George County Community Work Center was killed Thursday morning in a three-vehicle accident.
Robert Prine, 42, was serving 10 years for grand larceny and non-residential burglary in Marion County.
According to George County Sheriff Keith Havard, the incident occurred on Old Mississippi 63 north of Antioch Church Road. Havard said the accident was reported at 8:19 a.m. Thursday and that the Mississippi Highway Patrol had been requested to investigate.
Troop K Public Information Officer Chase Elkins said a white 2007 Mack CTS garbage truck driven by Billy Hollinger, 46, of Lucedale, was stopped northbound on Old Mississippi 63. A blue 2002 Ford F-150 driven by Shane M. Rusher Jr., 19, of D’Iberville, was also stopped on 63, behind the garbage truck. A third vehicle, a gray 2005 GMC Envoy driven by Brian K. Spanier, 41, of Lucedale crashed into the back of the Ford, pushing it into the back of the garbage truck.
The truck had two inmate workers on the back, according to Elkins. The inmate on the left of the truck was thrown from the truck and was transported to George County Regional Hospital with minor injuries.
Prine, however, was thrown from the truck and suffered fatal injuries, according to the Highway Patrol report. He died at the scene.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections said the inmate work crew duties have been halted during the investigation, which is ongoing.
A memorial service will be held at noon Friday at The Church on Main.
