Marion County’s unemployment fell again in April, dipping to 4.6 percent.
That’s good for 25th among Mississippi’s 82 counties and equal to the statewide rate.
The Mississippi Department of Employment Security released the April numbers this week. The rate in Marion County has been dropping slowly but steadily since it was at 5.4 percent in January.
There were 9,550 residents employed in Marion County in April out of a labor force of 10,020. Labor force represents people who either have a job or are actively seeking one.
Rates in Marion County, Mississippi and the nation have been near record-lows for multiple months. The unemployment rate in April 2018 in Marion County was 4.9 percent. Even though it’s a lower rate now, there were 100 more people employed a year ago versus today. The unemployment rate went down over that time because workers either moved or stopped searching for a job.
