The annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration is set for Monday.
A parade honoring the civil rights leader will begin at 1 p.m. in front of Citizens Bank on Main Street and travel south down Main, make a left onto Broad Street, a right turn on South High School Avenue and finally left on Lumberton Road. The parade will end at St. John the Baptist Church.
Prizes will be awarded to floats for different categories.
Following the parade will be a program at the church. A message of hope will be delivered by Deacon James W. Crowell III, who is the state treasurer for the NAACP.
Lorenza Williams, one of the organizers, said the parade has been going on in Columbia for more than 10 years.
“(King) fought for everyone’s rights, and we believe he should still be honored for his work,” she said.
The event is free and open to the public.
