Officials in Columbia and Marion County reported a relatively quiet weekend as shelter-in-place restrictions ordered by Gov. Tate Reeves began at 5 p.m. Friday. Marion County Sheriff Berkley Hall and Columbia Police Chief Michael Kelly said the majority of the people followed the governor's order and stayed home.
The officials said they are hoping people will adhere to the order, but if not the violators will be educated. If the violators continue with not following the mandate, they risk receiving a citation, having to appear in court and possibly going to jail.
Both the sheriff and the police chief received calls about a large funeral Saturday, and Kelly said they did go and tried to educate them on the dangers of having a large gathering.
Another area of concern is fishing on the Pearl River. After initial confusion, Reeves clarified that people can fish as long as it is no more than two people in a boat and no congregating on sandbars.
