Marie Shepard will continue to serve as president of the Columbia school board, Eric Lucas will serve as vice president and Tabitha Nelson will be secretary, board members decided at their Jan. 16 meeting.
In other business:
• Jefferson Middle School Principal Levi Robinson said a Parent Boot Camp will be at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 4. The event will offer parents tips for using Canvas/Powerschool software, dealing with bullying, homework tips, social media safety and dealing with stress.
• The board approved authorization for Columbia High School Principal Braxton Stowe, Superintendent Jason Harris and teacher Mitchell Crawford to travel with the Columbia High School Choir to New York City March 26 to March 30.
• The high school Spanish Club received approval to sell candy varieties to help defray costs associated with field trips and other events from Jan. 17 to Feb. 21.
•Columbia High’s newspaper, The Paw Print, received approval to sell Valentine’s cards and candy on Feb. 14. Funds raised will be for printing and project needs.
• The school board approved a second addendum to the school resource officer agreement with the city. The addendum will allow for a campus security officer in case a school resource officer is unavailable. The difference between a school resource officer and a campus security officer is a school resource officer is certified and the other is not.
The following resignations were approved:
• Nathaniel Smith, high school Spanish teacher, effective June 30;
• Gwen Breakfield, elementary special education teacher, effective Dec. 20, 2019;
• Jacqueline Foxworth, child nutrition program worker, effective Jan. 9.
The board approved the following hires:
• Megan White, middle school secretary/bookkeeper, effective Jan. 6;
• Ashley Luethje and ZyQuona Howard as substitute teachers;
• Danderia Walker, as a high school 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program worker.
